About
Jonathan Houlding is a BAFTA-winning Production Designer working across feature films, television and commercials internationally. A graduate of the Royal College of Art in London, he has spent over twenty years collaborating with some of the industry’s most respected directors, designers and producers, including Edward Berger, Sir Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, Sir Kenneth Branagh and Yorgos Lanthimos.
Jonathan feels as comfortable adapting and transforming real locations for intimate, character-led storytelling as he does creating large-scale worlds, complex set builds and VFX-driven environments. He won the BAFTA for Best Production Design for Save the Cinema, was BAFTA-longlisted for The Ballad of a Small Player, and has received numerous international awards for his work on commercials. He previously worked as Art Director on major productions including The Martian and Poor Things.
Originally trained in traditional drawing and design methods, Jonathan combines both a hands-on approach with a strong interest in emerging technologies and evolving filmmaking processes. Equally comfortable sketching concepts, overseeing construction, developing visual worlds or solving problems on set, he is known for combining artistic ambition with practical execution and collaborative leadership.
Alongside filmmaking, Jonathan is also a practising artist whose work has been exhibited internationally, included in the collections of the V&A Museum and the Miró Foundation. He has taught widely in universities in Fine Art and Film and remains passionate about supporting new and underrepresented talent entering the industry.
He is a voting member of BAFTA and has worked extensively across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

He has also taught at institutions including the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal College of Art, and co-founded an Arts Council-funded gallery in South East London focused on installation and contemporary art practices.
